Investing glossary: key terms explained

Short, plain-English definitions of the financial instruments and infrastructure that underpin Volity Invest. Each definition is self-contained and links to the related policy or product page where relevant.

What is an ETF?

An exchange-traded fund (ETF) is a pooled investment vehicle that holds a basket of underlying assets such as stocks, bonds, or commodities, and trades on an exchange like a single stock. Volity Invest offers ETFs covering broad market indices, sectors, and geographies through one account.

What is a Gold ETF?

A Gold ETF is an exchange-traded fund whose value is backed by physical gold bullion or gold-related instruments. Gold ETFs let investors gain exposure to the gold price without buying, storing, or insuring physical metal directly. They typically track the spot price of gold less an annual management fee.

What is a Crypto ETF?

A Crypto ETF is a regulated exchange-traded fund that provides exposure to one or more cryptocurrencies, such as Bitcoin or Ethereum, through a familiar brokerage account. It removes the operational complexity of self-custody and is subject to the same investor protections as other ETFs available on the platform.

What is CySEC?

The Cyprus Securities and Exchange Commission (CySEC) is the financial-services regulator of the Republic of Cyprus and an EU competent authority under MiFID II. CySEC supervises investment firms, enforces market-conduct rules, and operates the Investor Compensation Fund. UBK Markets Ltd holds CySEC licence number 186/12.

What is MiFID II?

The Markets in Financial Instruments Directive II (MiFID II) is the EU regulatory framework governing investment services across all 30 EEA member states. It mandates client categorisation, suitability and appropriateness testing, transparency on costs, and best-execution obligations. Volity Invest is supervised under MiFID II via its CySEC authorisation.

What is Fireblocks?

Fireblocks is an institutional digital-asset custody and infrastructure platform used by banks, exchanges, and regulated investment firms to safeguard cryptocurrencies and tokenised assets. It combines multi-party computation (MPC) cryptography, hardware-isolated key management, and policy-based transaction controls. Volity Invest uses Fireblocks for digital-asset custody.
